As I was wondering what topic to write about next, I started thinking about my first blog which I “published” in 2015. Back then, I wanted to write about music, a subject with which I was familiar since my childhood. This was my first article. Since I was not familiar with the technicality, I could not publish. I immediately followed up my first article with another. When I mailed this to a relative who was a music aficionado, he encouraged me to publish it in the form of a blog. With his guidance I “published” these 2 articles.
It took me another four years to "publish" my next blog. However, the subsequent one turned out to be a substantial post following an overseas vacation. In it, I described my experiences during the trip. I shared this with Manoj Khatri, a friend who is the editor of a personal growth magazine and had been in the profession for a long period. His invaluable guidance inspired me to persist with my writing. During a lengthy telephone conversation with Manoj, he suggested a few points that I try to follow whenever I write.
In the following paragraphs, I would like to share my experiences and explain why everyone should consider writing or blogging as a hobby.
Blogging is a fun and creative hobby that anyone can and should try. It's a way to express yourself and share your thoughts with the world. Whether you're passionate about a specific topic or just want to document your daily life, blogging is a great outlet.
Blogging doesn't require any special skills. If you can write a sentence and use a computer, you're good to go. Many blogging platforms, like WordPress or Blogger, are user-friendly and make the process simple. You don't need to be a tech whiz to start your own blog.
Choosing a niche or topic for your blog is the first step. What do you love or know a lot about? It could be anything from travel, food, books, or even your daily experiences. The key is to write about something that genuinely interests you. When you're passionate about your subject, it will reflect in your writing, making it more engaging for your readers. Personally, though I started with music, I realized that personal finance was a subject on which I could write very comfortably.
Once you've decided on your niche, it's time to create your first blog post. Keep it simple and conversational. Pretend you're talking to a friend. Short sentences work well, and don't be afraid to let your personality shine through. People enjoy reading blogs that feel authentic and relatable.
As you continue blogging, consistency is key. Try to establish a regular posting schedule, whether it's once a week or a few times a month. This helps you build a loyal readership who can look forward to your content. Plus, it keeps you in the habit of writing regularly.
One of the best things about blogging is the freedom it offers. You have the flexibility to write whenever and wherever you want. Whether you prefer typing away at your computer or jotting down ideas on paper, blogging accommodates different styles. It's your space to express yourself on your terms.
As you gain more experience, you might want to explore different types of content. Add some variety to your blog with photos, videos, or even interviews. Experimenting keeps your blog fresh and exciting for both you and your readers. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Here I would like to add that in the few blogs I have published so far, although personal finance content forms the bulk, I have also explored my other hobbies such as music, trekking, traveling, running, etc.
Monetizing your blog is also a possibility. While it may not be the primary goal when starting, many bloggers eventually find ways to earn a little extra income through their passion. This could be through ads, sponsored posts, or even selling products related to your niche.
Remember, blogging is a journey, not a destination. Your blog may evolve over time, and that's perfectly normal. Embrace the changes and stay true to yourself. The most successful blogs often reflect the personality and uniqueness of their creators.
In summary, adopting blogging as a hobby offers a fantastic avenue for self-expression, connection with others, and exploration of your passions. By embracing a straightforward and authentic approach, you can initiate your blog and relish the creative journey it unfolds. Don't hesitate—begin typing and let your thoughts permeate the blogosphere!
Eye opener for me. Thanks to my friend Abhisek who directed me to this post. I loved the last sentence - Begin typing and let your thoughts permeate...
