Beauty of Pyramids

As I was going through some old photos from my Google Photos, I came across the above image. It took me some time to realize the function in relation to which this photo was taken.

Hailing from a traditional South Indian family, we are accustomed to conducting poojas for various functions, whether they are social events like marriage, engagement, or socio-religious ones such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Vara(maha)lakshmi, Dassera, etc. For all these poojas, Ganesh Vandana or Ganesh pooja is mandatory and marks the beginning of such ceremonies.

In the traditional South Indian Brahmin system, Ganeshji is symbolized in the form of a pyramid made from turmeric powder, commonly referred to as Manjal Pillayar. I must have made over 100 such pyramid-shaped Manjal Pillayar since my school days. The pyramid structure has fascinated me since then, and we gradually started incorporating the pyramid shape into other aspects of our life.

Professionally, my brother and I chose to be self-employed. In our careers, we ventured into the exciting field of accounts, taxation, insurance, and related activities. Ten years ago, when we were setting up a new firm, incorporating the word "Pyramid" came naturally. It is no coincidence that my blog’s url is pyramidconsulting.blogspot.com. As I was contemplating the next topic for my blog, the thought struck me – why not write about pyramids? So here we go.

People have used this simple but amazing shape in buildings, art, and managing organizations. It shows how humans want to make and do great things. Its beauty comes from being simple, efficient, and having meaning.

At its most basic level, the pyramid is a three-dimensional triangle with a square base. However, its power lies in its ability to create a sense of scale and grandeur. The size of the pyramid can vary greatly, from the small pyramids found in some ancient cultures to the massive pyramids of Egypt. Regardless of its size, the pyramid has an undeniable presence that commands attention and respect. The shape of the temple gopurams of South India resemble pyramids.

One of the most beautiful aspects of this triangular structure is its efficiency. The structure is stable and sturdy, and its shape allows it to withstand the forces of nature, such as wind and earthquakes. This is due to the pyramid's low center of gravity and the way its weight is distributed evenly throughout the structure. This efficiency is especially impressive when considering that the pyramids were built without the aid of modern machinery or technology. Instead, they were constructed using simple tools and a workforce of thousands of people.

Beyond its physical attributes, the three sided monument is rich in symbolism. In ancient cultures, the pyramid was often associated with power, spirituality, and the afterlife. The pyramid's height was seen as a bridge between the earthly and divine realms, and the gold and precious stones that adorned the pyramids were believed to represent wealth and power.

In modern times, the pyramid's symbolism has evolved to include concepts such as hierarchy, efficiency, and success. In organizational management, the pyramid structure is often used to represent the hierarchy of authority, with the leader at the top and the workers at the bottom. This structure is believed to increase efficiency and productivity, as it allows for clear communication and decision-making.

The beauty of the pyramid structure is not limited to its physical or symbolic attributes. It is also found in the way it inspires us to achieve greatness. The pyramids of Egypt were built over the course of decades, using simple tools and a massive workforce. The people who built the pyramids were not motivated by money or fame, but by a desire to create something that would endure for centuries.

Today, the pyramid continues to inspire us to reach for the stars. It serves as a reminder that with hard work, dedication, and vision, we can achieve great things. The pyramid is a symbol of the human desire to create, to push boundaries, and to leave a lasting legacy.

To sum up, the beauty of the pyramid structure lies in its simplicity, efficiency, symbolism, and inspiration. It is a structure that has endured for centuries and continues to captivate and inspire us today. Whether we are admiring the pyramids of Egypt or the temple gopurams of South India or implementing a pyramid structure in our organizational management, the pyramid serves as a powerful reminder of what humans are capable of achieving when we work together with purpose and passion.
